Box-pressed or round: what actually changes
A square cigar burns slightly differently and sits better in your hand. The rest is preference.
Pressing changes the cross-section, the draw slightly, and the feel in your hand a lot. It does not change the blend, and claims that pressed cigars taste fundamentally different are mostly claims about a firmer draw.
Why it exists
Originally practical: pressing cigars in the box let more of them fit and stopped them rolling around in transit. The Cuban "trunk-pressed" tradition and the modern soft-press are both descendants of packing, not of blending philosophy.
What it does to the smoke
A pressed cigar has a marginally denser bunch in the corners, which usually means a slightly firmer draw and a marginally slower burn. Some people read that as a fuller, more concentrated smoke; blind, most cannot reliably separate a pressed and round version of the same blend.
Where it genuinely matters is comfort: a square cigar does not roll off an ashtray or a table, and many people simply prefer how it sits in the fingers and on the lip.
Do this: if you buy both versions of a blend, note the draw rather than the flavour. That is where the difference actually lives, and it is the part you can verify rather than imagine.
Soft press, box press, trunk press
- Soft press: gentle squaring, corners still rounded.
- Box press: firm, flat sides and defined edges.
- Trunk press: pressed in bundles for longer; the traditional Cuban method, now rare.
A storage note
Pressed cigars relax over months in a humidor and slowly round off, especially at higher humidity. That is normal and not a fault; if you want them to hold their shape, keep them in the box they came in rather than loose in a tray.
