Draw problems: what you can fix and what you cannot
Too tight is sometimes rescuable. Too loose never is.
Test before you light. A cold draw takes five seconds and tells you nearly everything: if air moves freely, the cigar is fine; if it feels like drinking through a blocked straw, deal with it now rather than at the halfway mark.
A tight draw
Usually one of three things: too much moisture, an over-filled bunch, or a cut that took off too little. The first is fixable with a day out of the humidor, the third with another millimetre off the cap, and the second sometimes with a draw tool.
A draw tool — a thin metal spike pushed down the length — breaks up a compacted bunch and rescues a fair number of otherwise unsmokable cigars. It is not elegant and it works.
A genuine plug
If a cold draw gives nothing at all, you have a rolling fault: a leaf folded across the channel or a hard knot of filler. Rolling the cigar gently between your fingers occasionally shifts it. Failing that, the cigar owes you nothing and you owe it nothing.
Do this: keep one cheap draw tool in the drawer. It costs less than a single premium cigar and it will save several a year — and the alternative is throwing away tobacco you already paid for.
Too loose
Nothing to be done. An under-filled cigar burns hot and fast, and the smoke arrives thin because the air is not spending long enough over the tobacco. Smoke it slower than you think and expect a short session.
Prevention
Lower storage humidity helps more than anything else: most tight draws in a home humidor are moisture problems rather than construction ones. If several cigars from one box are tight, look at your hygrometer before you blame the factory.
A pattern across a box, not a bad evening
Lots in Ligero stay separate with their own dates, and entries carry your notes. If three cigars from one box drew badly, that shows as a pattern attached to that lot rather than as three unrelated disappointments.
