Fake Cubans: five checks that catch most of them

Price, place, band, box and burn — in that order of usefulness.

The first check is not on the cigar, it is on the situation. Genuine Cuban cigars are expensive, tightly distributed and rarely sold at a discount by a stranger. Almost every fake gets past inspection because somebody wanted the price to be real.

The five checks

1. Price. Substantially below the local retail price means fake, or stolen, or both.
2. Where. Beach sellers, taxi drivers and hotel staff are the classic sources of counterfeits, including in Havana.
3. The band. Genuine bands are sharply printed with clean embossing. Blurred edges, wrong shade of gold, uneven dots — all common tells.
4. The box. Factory and date codes stamped underneath, a warranty seal with a barcode, and consistent construction inside. Loose, rattling cigars are a bad sign.
5. The cigars themselves. Uniform colour, uniform ring gauge, caps applied consistently. Fakes are usually visibly mixed.

What a fake smokes like

Harsh from the first inch, no development, often a bitter or chemical note, and frequently plugged or burning wildly unevenly. If a "Cuban" is unpleasant in a way no cigar you have smoked has been, you have probably answered the question.

One honest caveat

Genuine Cuban production has real construction variability, so a bad experience is not proof of a fake. The checks above are about provenance first and the object second, in that order.
