How many cigars is the right number to keep
Enough that something is always ready, few enough that you know what you own.
Roughly six months of smoking, plus whatever you are deliberately ageing. If you smoke twice a week, that is around fifty cigars. Past that, extra stock is not a bigger buffer — it is a bigger memory problem.
The arithmetic
Count how many you actually smoke in a month, not how many you think you do. Multiply by six. That is a working humidor: enough that everything has rested, enough variety for the mood you are in, and small enough that you can list its contents from memory.
Then add the ageing stock separately, because it is not the same thing. Ageing stock is not inventory you are drawing on; it is a bet with a date on it, and it should live on its own shelf.
Why a full humidor is easier than a half-empty one
Cigars and cedar hold far more moisture than air does. A packed humidor is a system with a big reservoir and slow, gentle changes. The same box with six cigars in it swings with every opening — which is why people with small collections chase humidity and people with full ones rarely think about it.
If you keep few cigars, use a smaller container. Matching the box to the stock solves more humidity problems than any pack upgrade.
Do this: before the next purchase, write down what you already own without opening the humidor. Whatever you cannot remember is the part you are not smoking, and that number is the real answer to how big your collection should be.
Where it stops being useful
Past a few hundred cigars, most people are no longer choosing what to smoke — they are managing a warehouse. Boxes go unopened for years, favourites get buried, and the pleasure of the shelf becomes the pleasure of owning rather than smoking.
There is nothing wrong with a large collection if it is deliberate. The failure mode is drift: buying faster than you smoke, then buying more because nothing in the box feels new.
