Water: the pairing nobody writes about
It adds nothing, which is exactly its job.
Water is the only thing on the table that resets your palate instead of overwriting it. Every other drink is a second flavour competing for the same attention.
What it does
It rinses residue between draws, keeps your mouth from drying out — a cigar is dehydrating — and gives you something to do with your hands that is not drawing on the cigar again. That last one quietly improves pace, which improves everything else.
Still or sparkling
Still for tasting, sparkling for cleaning. Carbonation scrubs the tongue more effectively, which is useful between two cigars and slightly distracting during one. Neither is wrong; they are doing different jobs.
Do this: keep a glass of room-temperature still water beside every cigar, whatever else you are drinking. It is free, it improves the smoke, and it is the only pairing advice in this whole section that has no downside.
Temperature
Cold numbs. Iced water between draws mutes your palate for a good half minute, which is exactly the wrong half minute. Room temperature is not an affectation here; it is the difference between rinsing and anaesthetising.
On long cigars
The second hour of a double corona is where dehydration and palate fatigue meet. Water helps both, and it is the cheapest reason a long cigar stays enjoyable to the end rather than turning into an endurance exercise.
Nothing to log, everything to notice
Water is not a pairing the app asks about — the sommelier asks about the drink you actually want. What matters for the record is what you noticed, and a note field beside the score is where a clearer second half belongs.

Resetting your palate: water, coffee, or nothing
Most of what dulls halfway through is adaptation, and adaptation is fixed by time, not by drinks.
PairingsNon-alcoholic pairings that actually hold up
Alcohol numbs the palate. Taking it out is not a compromise.
TechniquePace is the one habit that changes everything
Roughly one draw a minute. Faster, and you are smoking a different cigar.
